1000 Mile Socks

We now stock walking socks by 1000 Mile Socks

1000 Mile Sportswear say their socks will give you 1000 miles of blister free walking, or wear out first! These socks are two-layered – a thin liner is sewn into the sock giving two parts which slide across each other – so the friction doesn’t reach your foot. They really do work; I always use them when long distance hiking and they’ll be the socks I wear this January when walking the length of New Zealand’s South Island – I’ll also be using Noene insoles so we really do sell brands we like.

Amazing Noene insoles

You might think that ‘Amazing’ and ‘Insoles’ couldn’t go together as they’re just too boring, but believe me Noene insoles are incredible. I was first converted 18 months ago in Decathlon in France, and these insoles have proved a revelation. This is not just a sales pitch, this is personal enthusiasm – these insoles have changed my walking life and I absolutely swear by them.

Most insoles send some shock back up your leg, but these send it sideways. The resulting reduction in stresses on your system is quite amazing; from having constantly bad knees I now have almost no problems at all. They are well known in the world of physiotherapists, but not elsewhere. Give them a try, check out: http://www.noene.com/soles/en/index.php

Try the famous Noene ball test yourself by coming in to Gearshack, see the video at: http://www.noene.com/soles/en/ballTest.php

Don’t wear cheap sunglasses – buy Julbo!

At the Gearshack we sell only exceptionally high quality sunglasses by Julbo, the top French manufacturer. Wearing cheap sunglasses can be bad for your eyes – even the Daily Mail thinks so! Check our their article below.

Cheap sunglasses may look like a bargain, but could leave you seeing double or developing headaches.

Even those costing £5 from high street names such as Tesco and M&S failed some lab tests, breaching British Standard quality markers, according to consumer group Which?

Abseiling Using Prusiks – Caution

There has been some discussion recently following observation by a British Mountain Guide that when abseiling backed up by a prusik loop which is attached to a legloop of a harness, some types of harness with a cinching legloop buckle can come loose. This causes the legloop to open. The prussik can then jam in the abseil device and stop the abseiler.

The conclusion is: test to see if this happens with your harness; use harnesses with ‘double back’ buckles rather than ‘cinching’ style.

Gearshack set up Wind Turbine Escape Demo

Gearshack sell great Work at Height equipment, including an escape device which is used by the New York Fire Department. Yesterday we set up a demo of the kit by Petzl for a major wind turbine manufacturer, Nordex, in Cumbria. The Petzl demonstrator abseiled out of the pod on a 60 metre turbine and successfully showed the kit to the client – Gearshack are set to be a main supplier of Petzl gear.

Interested in Rescues? You’d have to be.

In Namur they hold a rescue event for teams from anywhere; with races and plenty of events this has to be of great interest to se other teams in action. personally I think I’d balk at all-day rescuing, but horses for courses. Check out the video; they certainly are a talented lot!

How not to Rescue Someone

We came across this good example of how to make someone in a stretcher feel distinctly uneasy.. funny how they were all joking just before it happened! Still, practice makes perfect.
